IMPORTANT

  • Course duration. This is a year-long service-learning course. GEN2050Y is offered in Semester 2 of the Academic Year; it runs till the end of Semester 1 of the following Academic Year, when grades are awarded. GEN2050X is offered in Semester 1 of the Academic Year; it runs till the end of Semester 2 of that Academic Year, when grades are awarded.

  • Mentoring period. Over the course of two MOE school terms, you will be journeying with your assigned mentee(s), often disadvantaged children or youth, through weekly mentoring sessions. The mentoring period for GEN2050Y is from March of the enrolling semester to September of the same calendar year (MOE Terms 2 and 3); for GEN2050X, from September of the enrolling semester to March of the following calendar year (MOE Terms 4 and 1).

  • Mentoring commitment. The mentoring period includes the summer vacation period for GEN2050Y, and the winter vacation period for GEN2050X. This is because of the commitment you will make to your mentees to journey with them during the MOE school year. For GEN2050Y, mentoring during the MOE June Holiday period is optional and subject to mutual agreement between the school/Student Care Centre (SCC) and mentors. Thus, you can still enrol in this course if you have other commitments during the MOE June Holiday period.

  • However, if you think you may likely be away due to Student Exchange Programme (SEP), overseas internship, Leave of Absence (LoA), short exchanges, etc, you SHOULD NOT enrol in this course. You would not be able to adequately fulfil your responsibility to the mentee(s). Students on local internships are not affected and should check with their faculty on internship guidelines.

  • Note to graduating students. If you intend to graduate at the end of AY2024/25 and wish to read GEN2050, the latest you can enrol is Semester 1 of that Academic Year, in GEN2050X. Grades are awarded at the end of Semester 2, which means your degree will be conferred in end-June, and you will join the Commencement ceremony in the same year.
