When students are un-enrolled unenrolled (via EduRec) from official academic courses, they are now considered inactive enrolments.

Inactive enrolments cannot access the course.

The inactive tag with following their name is how they are meant to appearCanvas displays it, and they the students cannot be removed nor hidden from the course. This is helpful as you may need to access data regarding the inactive students' participation and grades.People.

Notes on inactive Teachers and wrong sections displayed

The following are an unintended

Instead of completely removing a user enrolment from the course student and their associated data from a systemthe course (as it was prior to May 2023), their enrolment status is changed to inactive. This allows the data to be preserved and easily reactivated if the user is reinstated.

Note


Associated data includes the student’s participation in assignments, quizzes, discussions and groups, as well as any grades.

This enables seamless and complete reactivation, if a user needs to be reinstated.

As of Jan 2025, all inactive enrolments - staff and students - are removed at the start of the W grade period, for a cleaner display.

Any inactive enrolments that appear after this date indicate a student who has dropped the course or a staff who no longer teaches the course. These inactive enrolments will be retained so that the associated data can be reinstated, if needed.

Who sees the inactive users?

While instructors see inactive users in People, students cannot see inactive students nor inactive instructors.

  1. i.e. they will appear like student 2 in the inactive enrolments screenshot above. As of 22 May 2024, inactive sections are indicated with an Inactive text tag.

Do students see inactive users or sections?

Students do not see inactive students, inactive instructors nor inactive sections.

This can be verified by using Student View in People.

  • Also, for instructors who have been removed from a section, the students do not see the instructor in that section any more.

    • The students do not see the wrong information.

    Future direction

    The instructor view is admittedly misleading, so we are working on a solution to automatically remove enrolments that have been inactive for 3 days.

    This aims to balance the needs of managing inactive enrolments while ensuring a timeframe that should accommodate most cases. Once we have tested the solution, we will work to implement it.
