Financial Support for Students in Communities & Engagement (C&E) Work

The NUS C&E Pillar engages students with volunteer service work or community project work to bring direct or indirect benefits to the community, while learning complex skills, including empathy, (inter)personal effectiveness, conflict resolution, etc. In many cases, this requires students to frequently travel to the external sites where they perform the volunteer service or community project work. In some cases, this also requires them to incur expenses in the conduct of the volunteering or project work. The University is making funds available to students to help defray their cost of travel, and support their C&E work in general. This funding may be supported by philanthropy or otherwise. Details of support are given below.

If you are reading any of the C&E service-learning coursesa, the following support is available:

Travel Support

You are provided a one-off travel allowance of 90 SGD to help defray your travel costs. Payment will be automatically made to your registered bank account in EduRec when you successfully complete (i.e. pass) the course.

Small-Item Grant

You are provided with an additional grant of up to 100 SGD to cover small-item purchases that you may require for an approved activity in your service work. To utilise this grant:

    1. You first need to obtain a pre-approval of your proposed purchases and activity from your Course Lead before you make the purchase;
    2. Then you make the purchase and perform the activity;
    3. Finally, you need to collate your claims at the end of the month, and submit them via the online Claims Form (found on your Course Canvas Page), together with the following supporting documents (PDF or image): (i) Course Lead pre-approval, (ii) purchase receipts, and (iii) Course Lead acknowledgement of completion of activity. After validation, payment will be made to your registered bank account in EduRec.

If you are reading a C&E course that has community project-work component, please check with your Course Instructor or Coordinator for the support available. The Course Instructor or Coordinator may enquire with the C&E team at AskCnE@nus.edu.sg.
