[GEN2062X] Community Activities for Seniors with SG Cares

IMPORTANT

  • Course duration. This is a year-long service-learning course offered in both Semesters 1 and 2 of the Academic Year. GEN2062X is offered in Semester 1 of the Academic Year; it runs till the end of Semester 2 of that Academic Year, when grades are awarded. GEN2062Y is offered in Semester 2 of the Academic Year; it runs till the end of Semester 1 of the following Academic Year, when grades are awarded.

  • Service work period. Over the course of a year, you will be journeying with your assigned seniors, through weekly activity sessions. The service work period for GEN2062X is from Semester 1 of the Academic Year to the end of Semester 2 of that Academic Year; for GEN2062Y, from Semester 2 of the Academic Year to the end of Semester 1 of the following Academic Year.

  • Service work commitment. The service work period is year-long, during both the regular semesters. This is because of the commitment you will make to the seniors to journey with them during this one year. Thus, you can still enrol in this course if you have other commitments during the winter vacation period.

  • However, if you think you may likely be away during the regular semesters due to Student Exchange Programme (SEP), overseas internship, Leave of Absence (LoA), etc, you SHOULD NOT enrol in this course. Students on local internships and short exchanges are not affected.

  • Note to graduating students. If you intend to graduate at the end of AY2024/25 and wish to read GEN2062, the latest you can enrol is Semester 1 of that Academic Year, in GEN2062X. Grades are awarded at the end of Semester 2, which means your degree will be conferred in end-June, and you will join the Commencement ceremony in the same year.

SG Cares is a nationwide movement to support local communities through Volunteer Centres for a more caring and inclusive society. In one aspect, these centres provide activity hubs to help keep seniors active and connected. In this course, students will learn key concepts in volunteerism and essential skills in empathy, communications, conflict management, team and activity building, and apply these to the design, coordination and conduct of activities for seniors at selected Volunteer Centres. Thus, students will sharpen their interpersonal effectiveness in communications, collaboration and engagement. This course is a partnership with MCCY through its SG Cares Office.

4 Units. As this course spreads over up to a year, it will count 2 Units in the first semester and the other 2 Units in the following semester. Thus, students can always register for these courses on top of their usual planned workload of 20 Units or so, without breaching workload cap per semester.

Grading. Graded. Students will be assigned an In-Progress (IP) grade in the first semester and will receive their final grade upon the completion of the course.

Delivery and Assessment. There are no final exams. Students are required to watch pre-recorded online lectures, attend three face-to-face tutorials, and carry out service work. They will be assessed through the submission of a service portfolio.
