Students cannot view images on Pages/ Lock icon appears on Students view

There are two main reasons why students may see a lock icon instead of images on a Page (while teachers can see the images), and how to fix each one.:

Image still points to an old course it was copied from

  • When a new course is copied from an old course, images from the old course are copied into the new course.

  • However, some image links may still point to the old course.

  • Current students do not have access to the old course or its files, so those images will appear as a lock icon for them.

  • How to Fix:

    1. Open the current course and go to Files > Uploaded Media.

    2. Ensure the correct image(s) is/are in the Uploaded Media folder.

    3. Edit the Page and re-insert the image(s) from the current course’s Uploaded Media folder (so the link no longer points to the old course).

Image is in the current course’s “Uploaded Media” folder, but the folder is unpublished

  • In the current course, go to Files and look for the Uploaded Media folder.

  • If the folder icon appears as shown in the screenshot, it means the folder is unpublished.

  • How to Fix:
Change the permissions of the Uploaded Media folder:

    1. In Files, click the unpublished icon next to the Uploaded Media folder.

    2. In the Edit Permissions screen, change the setting to Only available with the link.

    3. Click Save.

DO NOT set the Uploaded Media folder to Publish(ed).

Publishing the folder would allow students to browse and access all files in that folder, including files they should not see (e.g. images used in quizzes).
