Customise/manage course navigation sidebar

The course navigation sidebar on the left-hand side of each course is customisable.

You can hide/display the course navigation sidebar by clicking the three horizontal lines on the left of the course code.

  1. In your course, click Settings at the bottom of the course navigation links.

  2. Click the Navigation tab.

  3. The tools are displayed in two sections, split by the Drag items here… section: visible tools on top, tools hidden from students below.

  4. You can drag and drop the tools from the visible section to the hidden section and vice-versa. Alternatively, use the three dots on the right of each tool to move them without using a mouse.

  5. Once done, scroll to the bottom and click Save.

  6. On your course home page, use View as Student to see the students' view.

Notes on tools' visibility

  1. If you make a tool visible, but the tool has no published content yet, it will still be not visible to students.

  2. The visibility icon only applies to native Canvas tools. External/third-party tools do not have the visibility icon e.g Videos/Panopto, Course Readings and others.

    1. Further, some third-party tools are not visible to students whether or not you make them visible in course navigation e.g. Studio.

  3. (Course) Settings is not visible to students.

  4. Preview what students can see in course navigation by using View as Student.
