Import marks to Canvas gradebook from applications outside Canvas (e.g. ExamSoft)

Import marks to Canvas gradebook from applications outside Canvas (e.g. ExamSoft)

These steps are for when you have NUS-IDs and marks downloaded from ExamSoft or other applications that do not connect directly to Canvas.

If you have a spreadsheet with NUS-IDs and grades, you can also use these instructions.

Getting your grades ready for import

  1. Download this template. You will fill in the user list and marks in this file.

    • Do not delete the headers in row 1.

  2. Add the list of NUS-IDs (for example, e0123456) under the SIS User ID column (column C), starting from row 2.

  3. Add the marks in column G, starting from row 2, matching each SIS User ID.

    • You can rename the default column G header (CA1) to your assignment title. This will be the Assignment title in your Canvas course. This is the only change you should make to row 1.

  4. Do not change or delete the other header entries, and do not delete any columns. Canvas needs these columns.

  5. Save the file as a .csv.

Import the grades to your course

The grade posting policy controls when the imported grades are shown to students

  • If you have not already created an assignment in your course for these marks, make sure your course grade posting policy is set to Manual. This lets you control when you want to post the grades. If it is set to Automatic, grades will be shown to students right after you import them.

  • If you have already created a No Submission or empty assignment and want to import the grades into it, check that the assignment’s grade posting policy is set to Manual for the same control over grade release.

  1. The assignment for which you want to import grades must be published.

  2. Go to your course > Grades > Import. Click Choose file and select your saved .csv file, then click Upload data.

  3. You will see an Assignment in question drop-down list and a This assignment is __ points field.

  4. For Assignment in question:

    • Choose A new assignment if you have not already created an Assignment for these grades.

    • If you have already created an Assignment, choose its title from the list.

  5. For This assignment is __ points possible, enter the total points possible for the assignment.

  6. Click Continue →.

  7. You will see a list of names with marks. There will be three columns: Student, From and To. This shows a preview of how marks will be given.

    • If you are importing into an assignment you already created, make sure the From column is empty. If it is not empty, you are about to overwrite existing grades.

  8. Click Save Changes to finish.
