Create online assignment

You can create an online assignment for students to submit their assignments via Canvas.

Create an online assignment:

Open Assignment

In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.

To create a new assignment, click the Add Assignment button.

Fill in the Assignment name.

Use the text box to fill in assignment details and instructions.

Fill in the Points the assignment is worth.
Select the Assignment group from the drop-down menu. You can create a new Assignment group by selecting [ Create Group ], if needed.

Select your Display grade as format from the drop-down menu.
If applicable, check Do not count this assignment towards the final grade.

Note: Students can only submit using one online entry option per assignment, even if you allow multiple online entry options.

For Submission type, select Online from the drop-down menu.

For Online entry options, select the online entry options you want to allow for the assignment. You can select up to (4) options:
1. Text Entry - Students can submit their assignment directly in the Rich Content Editor. Annotations are not available for text entry submissions.
2. Website URLs - Students can submit a URL that fulfils the assignment. Annotations are not available for Website URL submissions.
3. Media Recordings - Students can submit an audio or video recording that fulfils the assignment.
  ^{They can either record new media or upload existing media. Video and audio uploads to Canvas can be up to 500 MB. Annotations are not available for media recording submissions. Also, the recording cannot be downloaded.}
4. Student Annotations - Students can annotate a file uploaded by an instructor. The annotated document is submitted as the student's assignment submission.

e. File Uploads - Students can upload a file or take a photo with their webcam to fulfil the assignment.

Files submitted via online assignment are not counted on their user’s storage quota.

Note: Canvas does not support file uploads larger than 5 GB. However, media uploads cannot exceed 500 MB.

If you allow file uploads, you can choose to restrict submissions to specific file types.

To enable this option:

Click the Restrict Upload File Types checkbox
In the Allowed File Extensions field, enter a list of accepted extensions. All file types must be separated with a comma. You can included spaces, caps, and periods in assignment file names.
