Backward design

Backward design is a method of curriculum design that sets learning outcomes prior to selecting teaching/learning activities and assessment types. It usually involves three stages:

(1) identifying the desired results with a focus on the larger ideas and skills that students should learn, considering both outcomes and curriculum expectations;

(2) determining suitable evidence that confirm whether the desired learning has been achieved; and

(3) designing activities to achieve the desired learning outcomes.
