Not for handwritten papers

Do not use Turnitin assignment folders for handwritten papers. Handwritten text in images cannot be scanned by Turnitin. This includes image-based PDF files.

Turnitin offers similarity checking. It may detect similarity between submitted papers. These can then be subject to further scrutiny to determine if there has been plagiarism.

Preparation

  1. If you are new to Turnitin assignment folders in LumiNUS, please refer to the guides for /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157838 and /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157860 Turnitin assignment folders in LumiNUS.

This page provides specific instructions for Take-home Exams and is not meant to be a comprehensive guide for Turnitin assignment folders in LumiNUS.

  2. In Files, create a folder.

  3. Set the Folder Open Date to 15 minutes before the actual exam end time.

There is good reason not to open the Turnitin assignment folder at the start of the exam.

For security, Turnitin assignment folders time out after a certain period. By not allowing students to pre-load the Turnitin assignment folder at the start of the exam, you prevent them from getting timed out. If timed out, the student may not be able to access the Turnitin assignment folder again. That can only be resolved by the student clearing her/his browser cookies and cache.

  4. Set the Folder Closing Date as the actual exam end time, then Allow Late Submissions in the /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157860 (after you have created the Turnitin assignment, refer to point 9).

Submissions after the deadline will be in red font. This way, you can see those who have submitted after the deadline, and make a decision about any papers submitted after the deadline.

Alternatively, you can set the Folder Closing Date and time to at least 5 minutes after the actual exam end time so that students have some buffer time to upload their files.

    Turnitin Folder Close

Turnitin assignment folder close logic differs from LumiNUS submission folders.

    1. For Turnitin assignment folders, the folder closing date represents the deadline.

    2. Students can still enter the Turnitin assignment folder after the deadline.
      1. If they are allowed to submit late, they will be able to do so after the deadline.
Students who submitted on time will not be able to resubmit after the deadline.
      2. If they are not allowed to submit late, they will be able to enter the folder but they will not be able to submit.
  5. Toggle Allow Student Submission to Yes, then toggle Enable Turnitin Integration to Yes.

  6. Set Feedback Release Date for the Turnitin Folder to Yes.
Set the date to after the module close date, unless you intend for your students to see the feedback (i.e. your marking, if you are using the e-Annotation tools in Turnitin).

  7. Click Create Folder.

  8. Once created, enter the folder and click Settings (cog icon). (Detailed instructions for /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157860.)

  9. Expand the Optional Settings. Here are the settings that you must configure:

    1. Submission settings
      1. Submit papers to Standard paper repository.

      2. Uncheck Allow submission of any file type. If you allow any file type, similarity checking may not carried out.

      3. Check Allow late submissions. Always allow students to submit. You can deal with late submissions, if any.

      4. New If you want to mark anonymously, check Enable anonymous marking. Be aware of the caveats below, including /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157900 sufficiently far in the future.

    2. Compare against
      1. Check all the options.

    3. Similarity Report
      1. Generate Similarity Reports for student submission.

Select Generate reports on due date (students can resubmit until due date).

This prevents the student from receiving the similarity report before the due date.

      2. Uncheck Allow students to view Similarity Reports, since this is a final exam - students will not be able to see the Similarity Report.

    4. Click Submit.

Contingency

Turnitin is a cloud service, not within the university's control. In case Turnitin is experiencing issues on the day, you may want to set up alternative LumiNUS submission folders to collect the student's papers first.

  1. If you use one Turnitin assignment folder for the exam, set up a alternative /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157842 called Backup submission or similar.
    1. Set the open date to a date in the future, perhaps a day after the exam. Set the open time to the same time as the exam. (This way, if you need to activate the folder you only need to change the date.)
    2. Set the close date to the same time as the actual close time.

  2. If you use several Turnitin assignment folders for the exam:
    1. Follow step (a) above. However, create a normal LumiNUS folder instead of a LumiNUS submission folder. Once created, enter the folder.
    2. /wiki/spaces/LumiNUSstaff/pages/14157842 in this folder, following the same number of folders as the Turnitin submission folders. You can follow the original submission dates and times. You can configure the permissions for the respective submission folders as well.

  3. If you need to activate the alternative submission folders, edit the top level folder's open date so that students can enter the LumiNUS submission folders to submit.

  4. You can download the papers and /wiki/spaces/THE/pages/35032622. Please note the following caveats regarding Quick Submit:
    1. the papers need to be identifiable (by file name or cover sheet) as you are uploading the papers and there will be no other way to identify who submitted each paper;
    2. all papers submitted via Quick Submit are entered into the student database, there is no opt-out; and
    3. only the person who submits can access the similarity reports, you will need to export the reports to PDF if others need to see them.
