Creating cross-listed courses in Canvas

Official cross-listed courses in EduRec

Canvas course sites for all official courses that are cross-listed in EduRec are created automatically. Individual sections are created for each of the classes within the courses.

Courses not officially cross-listed but managed as one

For courses that are not officially cross-listed in EduRec but need to have a combined Canvas course site will need to be updated in Curriculum Management System (CMS) to specify this requirement. Once specified in CMS, then the courses will be then be combined into a single course site in Canvas.

IMPORTANT: things to note for cross-listed courses

Only the main/parent course code is displayed

This is regardless of whether the courses are official or unofficial cross-listed courses.

You can check whether the module is cross-listed by going to the course > Settings > Sections tab.

You will see the course codes of the cross-listed courses in the course sections list.

Action to take if this is not the case?

Communicate with your students as they may not see their course code on the Canvas Dashboard

As only the main/parent course code is displayed, students in the other cross-listed courses may think that there is an error.

You can ameliorate this situation by:

  1. Sending a welcome message to students at the start of semester (make sure that your course is published before you send the welcome message).
