People (Course Roster)
Export Course Roster
NUS Tools provides a course roster with a large photo and additional student information.
You may export the course roster to a spreadsheet or PDF.
Use the search bar to search for a particular student.
Use the All Student Roles drop-down list to only view a specific student role.
Use the Section filter selector drop-down list to choose a specific section or multiple sections to display, instead of the whole cohort. Click Apply Filters after selecting section(s).
Click the three dots, then Export. The export options include:
the student role,
the section(s) to export.
choice of export columns, including photo,
export to spreadsheet or PDF, and
depending on your selection for (c), whether you want:
one student per row i.e. multiple values (e.g. Sections) are combined for each student and listed in one row, or
duplicated rows i.e. if a student is in two Sections (e.g. lecture and tutorial), the student’s information will be in two rows, one for each Section.
Export with photos will take a significantly longer time.
Add Teacher to a closed/past academic course
Courses that are closed (i.e. past the End date in Course Settings) are in read-only mode.
NUS Tools allows you to add a Teacher to a closed/past academic course. NUS Tools is not meant to be used to add teachers for non-academic courses.
As all roles are in read-only mode in past courses, there is only one standard role for users added to past courses: the Teacher role. S/he cannot modify the past course.
You will need to have a Teacher-based role in the past course or be a Canvas department representative/unit admin to do this.
On the People tab in NUS Tools, click the three dots on the right.
Click Add Teacher.
In the window that appears, use the search field to find the person you want to add. You can search using the person’s name or NUS-ID. Friendly-email aliases will not work.
Click Search.
Select the relevant person (there may be more than one result).
Click Add Teacher.
Wait while the teacher is added to the course. You will see a message in green:
The user <NUS-ID> is being added to the course.Once the message and window clears, the user has been added. Please verify in People in the course.
Letter Grades
In Canvas, the Display grade as: Letter Grade option shows a letter grade in addition to the points score.
If you want to show only letter grades (and hide the actual points), use the Letter Grades function in NUS Tools. This creates a duplicate assignment (without submissions) that shows only letter grades (and 0 points) which you can post for students.
Part 1: Prepare the graded assignment/quiz
Create and set up the real graded activity
Create a graded assignment or graded quiz in Canvas.
In the assignment settings, set Display grade as: Points.
Do not select Letter Grade here.
Set Grade Posting Policy to Manual
Ensure the assignment/quiz has its Grade Posting Policy set to Manual.
(See: Select a grade posting policy for an Assignment)
Grade the assignment as usual
After the due date, grade the submissions in Canvas.
DO NOT post grades for the original assignment
If grades have already been posted (even if you later hide them), this assignment will not appear in NUS Tools for selection.
Use NUS Tools to generate a letter grade-only assignment
You will use the Letter Grades function in NUS Tools later to create a new assignment that:
Shows only letter grades; and
Shows 0 points for everyone (because Canvas requires a numeric score).
This new assignment is the one for which you will eventually post grades.
Part 2: Use the Letter Grades function in NUS Tools
A. Go to the Letter Grades tab in NUS Tools
Don’t see NUS Tools in your course navigation links?
In your course, go to Settings > Navigation tab and move NUS Tools to the visible section.
Then click NUS Tools in the course navigation and go to the Letter Grades tab.
B. Configure the Letter Grades job
Ensure course grade posting policy is set to Manual
This is because the letter grades assignment created by this process will be automatically posted if the course grade posting policy is Automatic. You want to give yourself the opportunity to review the assignment before posting.
Select the Original Assignment
In the Original Assignment drop-down, choose the assignment/quiz you graded earlier.
This list only shows graded assignments where grades have NOT been posted.
Assignments where grades were posted (even if hidden later) do not appear.
Choose a Grading Scheme
Select a Grading Scheme to convert points to letter grades.
If you don’t want to use the default scheme, you can view, manage, and add grading schemes.
Click Process
NUS Tools will:
Create a new, no-submission assignment containing the letter grades.
Set the numeric score for all students to 0 (Canvas requires a points score, but this will not reflect the actual marks).
Wait for confirmation
You will receive an email when processing is complete. If you refresh the Letter Grades tab, you should also see this run under Requests overview.
Part 3: Post grades for the new letter grade assignment
Review the new letter grade assignment
In Canvas, check the new no-submission assignment to confirm:
Letter grades are correct, and
Points are shown as 0 for everyone.
Post grades for the letter grade assignment only
When you are satisfied, post the grades for the new no-submission assignment with letter grades.
DO NOT post grades for the original assignment
Leave the original assignment’s grades unposted.
Use the original assignment (with the points) when importing marks into IMMS.
Important notes
The new assignment is a snapshot of the grades at the time you processed it. If you later change scores in the original assignment:
The new letter grade assignment will not update automatically.
You need to re-run the Letter Grades process in NUS Tools to refresh the letter grade assignment.
If you intend to release the comments/feedback in the actual assignment, make use of the scheduled feedback release feature.
In the Assignment’s Grade Posting Policy, enable Schedule Release Dates.
Opt for Separate Schedules.
For Grades Release Date, set a date far in the future so that the actual points are not released.
Set a Comments Release Date as desired.
Save.
