What are the acceptable file sizes and formats for Turnitin? (Student)

Size

Files should:

  • be less than 100 MB,

  • contain at least 20 words, and

  • be less than 800 pages.

If your paper exceeds the file size or page count, try to reduce the file size by compressing the file, removing non-text content or submitting the paper in plain text.

Format

Turnitin currently accepts the following file types for upload into an assignment:

  • Microsoft Wordā„¢ (.doc and .docx)

  • Corel WordPerfectĀ® (.wpd)

  • HTML

  • Adobe PostScriptĀ® (.ps)

  • Plain text (.txt)

  • Rich Text Format (.rtf)

  • Portable Document Format (.pdf) - must contain text to be submitted, see note below.

  • Hangul Word Processor file (.hwp)

AdobeĀ® PDF

Turnitin will not accept PDF image files, forms, or portfolios, files that do not contain highlightable text (e.g. a scanned file - usually an image), documents containing multiple files or files created with software other than Adobe AcrobatĀ®.
