Create alumni and non-NUS accounts

For alumni and non-NUS users who do not have an account in Canvas, new personal accounts will need to be created before they can be added to a Canvas course.

Please use the Canvas user account creation (UAC) service to create new personal accounts for alumni and non-NUS users.

Please note that you and the users of the accounts you create must adhere to:

  1. NUS Acceptable Use Policy for IT Resources

  2. NUS IT Security Policy

    1. Particularly Chapter 4: Access Control Security

  3. NUS data standards for names and email addresses

The process is automated, and the accounts are created within the next 10-15 minutes of your submission.

The form must be submitted by authorised NUS personnel. Alumni and non-NUS users are not able to create Canvas accounts for themselves using this service.

Non-NUS user accounts expire after four months of inactivity.

Accounts for NUS staff, students, visitors are automatically created in Canvas, so there's no need to use this service for these users. Please use their NUSNET accounts in Canvas instead.

OAP automatically creates relevant accounts for alumni and non-NUS users. There is no need to manually create accounts using this service if your course is on OAP. The Canvas/OAP integration is targeted to be ready by early 2023.

FAQs

Can this service be used for instructors too?

Yes, but please refer to this page to decide whether using an NUS Visitor account would be more appropriate.

How can I add non-NUS users as instructors to a course?

Non-NUS users who need to be added as instructors should be given visitor accounts. NUS Visitor account creation is the purview of the respective departments.

What is the Default Password field in the template for?

The Default Password field is only applicable for non-NUS users. We recommend to leave this field empty in the spreadsheet unless you have a specific need to use it (e.g. your learners belong to a company with strict email policies that will block Canvas verification emails).

  1. When the Default Password field is empty, Canvas automatically sends a verification email to each non-NUS user in the Excel. Clicking the link in the verification email takes the user to a page to set his/her Canvas password.

  2. When the Default Password field is populated, Canvas creates each non-NUS user account with the specified default password, and no automated email is sent. You will have to email the learners to inform them of the password and request them to change their password in Canvas upon logging in for the first time.

I have successfully created a non-NUS user, but still cannot add him/her to my Canvas course site roster.

Please refer to Add non-NUS users to a course for more information.e

I have created an account, but I need to edit the name of the non-NUS user. How can I do so?

You may use the UAC form. Fill in the details, with the updated name. If we detect an existing account (via the email address), the name will be updated based on your latest upload.

Can the account be shared?

No, the non-NUS Canvas accounts are personal accounts. Each person accessing Canvas requires a separate accounts. The accounts must not be shared.
