Create a new gradebook item in Canvas

In Canvas, you generally do not create columns/items directly in Gradebook, rather each Gradebook item is tied to a corresponding graded item such as an assignment, a quiz or a graded discussion. 

To create gradebook items, proceed to create an assignment, a quiz or a graded discussion which will then automatically create the respective gradebook item.

You can also create no-submission assignments for grading items which are not submitted electronically through Canvas, such as class participation, presentations, or papers handed in during class or exams that happen during class time.

Finally, you can import grades to form a new column in the gradebook. When you do so, a corresponding no-submission assignment is automatically created.
