Teams Provisioned from Canvas
There is existing auto-provisioning of Microsoft Teams for Teaching based on EduRec groups. It provisions 1 class team per group for NUS academic courses only:
Lecture (L)
Design Lecture (D)
Packaged Lecture (P)
Seminar-Style Course Class (E)
Sectional Teaching (S)
This is different from the Teams provisioning from Canvas.
Format of the team name auto-provisioned for academic courses: term_coursecode_classgroup.
For example, 2310_CIT1000_L1Format of the team name which is provisioned from Canvas: coursetitle.
For example, CIT1000 Induction Course [2310]
Please activate only the needed provisioned Class Teams to avoid confusing your students.
First-time enabling Microsoft Sync (Manual)
For the first-timers who want to provision the Class Teams for their courses.
Go to your course which you want to enable Teams provisioning.Â
Click Settings at the bottom of the left-hand course navigation links. Click the Integrations tab.
Â
Toggle State. It should change from a cross to a green tick.
Click Sync Now.
This will initiate the creation of your Class Team. It may take up to an hour to generate.Â
Wait for the Sync completed successfully status message. While waiting, you may navigate elsewhere in Canvas. This will not disrupt the syncing.
Once completed successfully, please login to Teams. You will see:
A notification in Teams, and
The course’s class team provisioned with the enrolment.
What's Next (after provisioned)Â
The owner of the provisioned Team needs to Activate it in the Teams in order for students to access it.
Microsoft Teams classes and Microsoft Teams meetings can be accessed from the course navigation.
Microsoft Teams classes
Click the Microsoft Teams classes link on the left-hand course navigation links, then click Open, which will launch the class team via the Teams app.Microsoft Teams meetings
You can schedule a Teams meeting.
Select the channel to add this meeting.
Or, click Add entire class to add the enrolment from Teams. (Optional)
Auto-Sync with Change of Course Enrollment
Subsequent syncing is triggered by changes to the course enrolment.
This auto-sync will only sync the enrolment.
Changes to the course title in Canvas will not be updated in subsequent syncs.
You will be able to see the date of the last sync. This is indicated by Last Sync.
For example:
If you would like to manually sync, it can only be done every 90 minutes.
Things to Note
Microsoft Teams is unable to support courses having enrolments greater than 25,000 or if the course has more than 100 owners.
Canvas Course Title is synced to Team Name.
Canvas Roles mapping in Teams:
Teacher role in Canvas is provisioned as Owner in Teams.
TA role in Canvas is provisioned as Owner in Teams.
Course Coordinator role in Canvas is provisioned as Owner in Teams.
Student role in Canvas is provisioned as Member in Teams.
Guest Student role in Canvas is provisioned as Member in Teams.
Only active NUS accounts (excluding visitor accounts) will be synced.
If the course has users with non-NUS emails, they will not be synced to Class Team even though the message says the sync is completed successfully.
Visitor (EXT) accounts cannot be synced.Â
This integration can be for any course in Canvas (not restricted to only academic courses).
It is recommended to enable the provisioning only when everything is in a steady state. For example, if you need to combine/de-combine course sites or change the course title, it's best to do these before enabling the provisioning.
